Well-being

What is well-being?

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is the state of being happy, healthy, or prosperous. These states of being are both physical and mental, and are subjective. Well-being can come from numerous sources; your experiences, your thoughts, and even your every-day actions. It is a state that constantly evolves- which is why it is a balancing act. Well-being for an individual can change as ones priorities shift- and it is important to keep an open mind when assessing ones status of being. I believe that well-being is also dependent on frame of mind. One can look at the same glass as half empty, or half full, and the way one views it can determine ones assessment of self.

When reflecting on my own happiness, I realized that what made me “happy” when I was younger has changed, but the broad dimensions that something may have fallen into has not. For that reason, the buckets I used when developing my own matrix of happiness are intentionally vague.

1. Sense of purpose: Everyone wants to feel that they are valued- that there is a reason for them being there. In essence, it is something to live for.

2. Social / Community: community involvement provides a sense of connectedness and belonging. Communities can exist or be created by anyone- from a shared geographic location, similar hobbies or sports, shared experiences or a common cause (ect). A community can often provide a purpose for the individuals involved.

3. Health- physical AND mental: both are interconnected and are two important pieces of the puzzle. Emotions affect ones health- aka the mind/body connection.

4. Outlook on the future: This is all about mindset. According to a recent New York Times article, a positive outlook may impact your health.

5. Work-Life Balance: Prioritization is important. This helps one to balance their responsibilities and rank in importance what they need to get done.
